"The House that Love Built" is a remodel of a 1951 residential home into a multi-family residence that assists transitionally homeless families. After obtaining the nationally recognized green expertise of Brothers Strong the owner, Gracewood, determined that the home was a prime candidate to become the first ANSI Gold remodel in Texas. The work had challenges including the desire to maintain the feel of the original home while improving the design, insulation, roofing, and energy efficiency within the budget of a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
Key Green features and products include:
Sherwin Williams donated all low VOC paint/adhesives, Pella Energy Star rated windows, Energy Star appliances Gulf & Basco, American Clay natural and toxic-free wall finishes, Rinnai tankless water heating, Energy Star rated roof, Velux Sun Tunnels and solar powered attic fans, Radiant barrier attic paint from Sherwin Williams, Water Sense Certified plumbing fixtures from Kohler and Delta.
Whenever possible material were obtained within 200 miles (e.g. concrete, cedar fencing, mulch) and, Mary Edwards provided the landscape design which enabled Gracewood to use local plants, compost bin and a design requiring no irrigation system.
